PAL Visits U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship

On Tuesday, August 7, the Dunn PAL Summer program visited the U.S.S. North Carolina in Wilmington. While there, our students were able to experience first-hand what life was like in the Navy during World War 2. As we guided ourselves through the ship we were able to see how these soldiers lived on the ship during wartime. It was very interesting to see for myself how much these soldiers had to go through on the ship and how they operated daily in such tight quarters.
My favorite part of our trip was walking through the ship itself. It had everything our soldiers needed: from beds and bathrooms to barbershops and offices. The ship featured medical supply rooms, armor and weapon stockpiles, and a cafeteria complete with big pots and a mess hall. There were many pipes throughout the ship that were responsible for different functions. Some carried water while others filtered fuel through the underbelly of the ship. Sometimes people forget how much soldiers went through just to fight for our country’s freedom!
