My Band Experience: Senior Year

Even though I attend PAL at times, I also have school duties to take care of. I attend Midway High School in Sampson County, where I was a member of the color guard with the Midway High School Marching Band.
I had two weeks of band camp, working with the band kids and the girls that are also in color guard. I had an instructor named Mr. Less that taught us the importance of toes, body posture, hands, and attitude. Dealing with the girls can be pretty tough, especially when it comes to the leaders having to push us to give 110%. When it comes to being the only senior in the color guard section, I have to look at the bright side of things when it comes to doing the work that I’m supposed to do. It has its good and bad days just like any other job.
I have underclassmen I can speak to without having to feel so pressured, I can have fun and I can showcase my performance, working with the flag, just showing what I have. I wouldn’t say I love Color Guard, but I wouldn’t say I hate it either. It’s something I really like, but it’s not a passion. Despite having the dream of winning another Grand Champion award and that going down the drain (simply because it never happened), the lessons I have learned have been added to my everyday life.
One great one I’ve learned is “If you have nothing nice to say, you should just keep your lips zipped”. That’s what my Color Guard coach told me and the rest of the group. Just think of it. Why waste your breath on negative topics if it’s not for the greater good? Why waste your breath on something so little when you can use it for something efficient in life? No need for the pettiness, no need for the hate. Just move on and live life to the fullest. After all, you get one great chance of a lifetime to live. Use it wisely. Yes, we had other trophies instead of Grand Champion. All that matters is that we started and ended as a team.
Now, as for my second semester, it is pretty chilled back. The most that I am participating in is Chorus/Vocal Music. I have already participated in a few performances with the chorus group. This Saturday, a Carowinds performance in Charlotte will take place. Our group will be performing two pieces there and will be judged by professionals to hopefully get a rating of superior.
The last performance the chorus group will have is Arts Night, which is a huge event for MHS itself. All of the Arts programs in the high school come together to show their talents and everything that has been worked on to be seen by the community, the school superintendents and the higher upper level workers within Sampson County. This will be my third year of doing Arts Night, counting in the two semesters I have. I’m proud of what I have been involved with in Midway. Even with all the bad stuff there is, there is also a good side to the school too.
