2018 Mentor Summit Preview

Last summer, Dunn PAL took eight students on a three-day trip to Potomac, Maryland for the Youth Mentoring Summit. Stephanie Coxum and Rodney Rowland hand-picked these students based on their behavior and their will to learn new skills they could use later in the program. During the trip, we broke off into four different groups to learn useful tips on peer mentoring. The four tips we learned the most about were communication with mentees, boundaries, teamwork, and helping your mentees accomplish their dreams. We had the pleasure of meeting people from all over the country, including as far out as the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was a great eye-opening experience. When I go this year, I hope to learn how to be more helpful to my mentees as well as developing an effective mentee/mentor relationship. I want to meet more new kids around my age and become their friend. I feel like this is a good experience for anyone to learn better communication skills as well as opening up and meeting new people.
