A Teen’s Perspective of the 2018 BET Awards

As many of you may have heard, the BET Awards were broadcasted last Sunday. It showcased a lot of talent, power, and black excellence. There were many points in the show that explained the importance of the black community and how it can have an impact on the world. There were many celebrities that were present; Ella Mai, Remy Ma, Nicki Minaj, Marsha Ambrosius, Big Sean, Meek Mill, and much more. Jamie Foxx was the host of the night.

Many of the performances were mind-blowing and unexpected. One of the performances that caught many people’s attention was when Meek Mill and Miguel performed their new song, “Stay Woke”. It speaks mostly about police brutality and gun violence. As a teen, I believe the song is titled “Stay Woke” because of everything that has been going on in our society and that, for the most part, nothing is being done about the issues occurring. The young people are the future of the next generation and generations to come. The young ones should not have to live their lives in this much fear.

There were two main awards that were very legendary, the Lifetime Achievement Award and Ultimate Icon. The two amazing and beautiful winners for these awards were Anita Baker & Debra L. Lee. Both have made very big contributions to the black community in showcasing what they are truly made of. Anita Baker made her big break into the music industry and influenced a lot of up-incoming artists, such as Mary J. Blige. She left a message, telling everyone who truly has a passion in life to keep doing what they are doing and to never give up on that dream or passion. Debra L. Lee had a big bang when it came to making BET and to bringing black people into the forefront of entertainment, letting their voices be heard. With huge thanks to Miss Debra, the black community wouldn’t have a chance to showcase their true potentials and show what each individual can do. Overall, I think that the BET Awards was a huge success this year and I hope it continues for more years to come.
